James E. Finan Jr.
A funeral mass will be celebrated today at 9 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church for
James E. "Ned" Finan Jr. 78, former Town of Concord Police Chief. He died
Sunday, May 30 in St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. Chief Finan has been a resident of St. Petersburg for the past 13 years. He was the husband of the late Julia (Mansfield) Fianan who died in 1965.
Born in Concord on November 27, 1903, he was the son of James E. and Ellen
T. (Toomey) Finan. After attending Conconrd publick schools and Concord High
School, Class of 1921, he joined the Concord Police Department in in 1931. He
was appointed Chief of Police in 1961 and retired from the police department
in 1966.
Chief Finan was a member and past Grand Knight of the Concord Council Knights
of Columbus #287. He was also a member of the Massachusetts, New England,
and international Police Chiefs Association, the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association, and a former member of the Massachusetts National Guard. He was
made a Captain of the Mt. Vernon Guard of Alexandria, Va. in 1965 and was also
made an honorary Kentucky Colonel. In St. Petersburg, he was a member of St. Raphael's Church.
Chief Finan is survived by three sons; James E. Finan III of Concord, Lt. Col. Richard M. Finan, Ret. of St. Petersburg, Fla., John D. FInan of Raymond, N.H.,
a daughter, Constance M. Pumphret of Concord; a brother, Phillip Finan of Maynard; four sisters Margaret Whiting of Concord, Sister Jacquenetta at
Bethany in Framingham, Florence Casey of New York and Catherine Flagg of
Somerville. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Internment will be in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetary. Members
of the Concord Police Department will serve as honor guards.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Heard Fund, 112 Cypress St.
Brookline, 02146. Arrangements are being completed by the Joseph Dee & Son
Funeral Home.

Obituary - Concord Journal 1981
Thomas Vincent Finan of Willow Street, Concord, died Sunday at Emerson
Hospital. He was the husband of Maude E. (Cameron) Finan.
Born in Concord on August 10, 1900, he was the son of James E. Finan and
Ellen Theresa (Toomey) Finan. He attended Concord Schools and was a member
of the Concord High School class of 1918.
Mr. Finan was employed by the Town of Concord as a police officer for 31 years,
retiring as a Sergeant in 1956. He had previously been employed as a guard
at the Old Charlestown Prison in Charlestown. and at the Concord Reformatory.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard in the Boston area,
and with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association; Knights of Columbus, Concord Council #287 and the James J. Mansfield American Legion
Post of Concord.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters. Theresa Banfield of Hudson and
Dorothy Sheridan of Marshfield; two brothers, James E. Finan Jr. of St. Petersburg Fla. and Philip H. Finan, Sr. of Atlantic Beach Fla., four sisters,
Katherine M. Flagg of Medford and Florence V. Casey, both of Long Island N.Y.,
Margaret E. Whiting of Concord, and sister Mary Jacquenetta C.S.J., Fontbonne
Halle, Framingham; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was also
the brother of the late Gerald H. Finan.
The funeral was yesterday from Joseph Dee & Son Funeral Home followed by
a funeral mass in St. Bernard's church with the Rev. John J. Cannon as celebrant. Internment followed in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetary
where Fr. Cannon read the commital prayers.
The town flag was flown at half staff yesterday in honor of Mr. Finan's service to the country during World War II.

brother Timothy moves with them, and brothers Daniel and William move
in with them as well (did they just come over from Ireland ?...they were not
listed in the 1874 town directory.

related is unknown (Pat Byrne believes that they are). This family came
initially from Brenamore, then went to Carromore, before moving on to
Cloonfower. Patrick Finan's house is on the road leading out of Castlerea
into Cloonfower, on the left about 4 houses before the crossroads.
